Chapter 21

2 days until the expedition

Tuesday

Hank waited at his usual spot at the conference table in the library, drumming his fingers and ignoring the chatter from the other end of the room. With only a few days remaining until the trip, were they ready? There had been no communication about the expedition from Mariela since her boss had shown up unexpectedly at the meeting two days ago, so maybe things were ready and maybe they weren’t.

He still didn’t know half of what he needed to know about the weather. He should have paid more attention during his training with Cooper. But the guy was so disagreeable, it made it hard to work with him. Were the other preparations in place? He had seen Mariela at Opali’s birthday party, so it’s not like something had happened to her.

But Mariela never seemed to recover after Liam Price left the last meeting. She had looked out the window for a long time after Liam left, long after the guards had swept the house for bugs, and long after the group returned to their preparations. She had left the room eventually, not speaking to them but sending a message that she needed some time alone to think.

Now after the silence of the last couple days, they were finally back together. Mariela swept into the room and called the group to the table. Georgia sat by Hank, and Amaya sat next to her. T-Rock and Bren took their usual seats. Cooper, who had no reason to be there when he wasn’t training Hank, sat at the head of the table next to Mariela.

Mariela cleared her throat. “Before we get started talking about why I called you here, Cooper has an announcement.” She nodded at Cooper.

“Thanks, Mariela.” He paused like he couldn’t figure out what to say. “I wanted to let you all know…I’ve decided to go on the trip with you.”

What? It sounded like Cooper was trying to get him kicked off the expedition and take over his role. Hank looked at Mariela. “You’re not replacing me with him, are you?”

“Of course not,” Cooper said. “I’m sure the team can find some other use for you.”

Jerk. “If you knew you were going, then what did you spend all that time training me for?”

“Maybe if you had learned more about reading the weather, I wouldn’t have to go with you.”

Well, it wasn’t Hank’s fault Cooper was a bad teacher.

“Gentlemen,” Mariela stepped in before Hank could come up with some biting remark. “If I can interrupt your argument, I have other things I’d like to cover during this meeting. Hank, you will continue to train as a backup to Cooper. Moving on…as you all know, Liam has put me in a difficult position. I really, really hate this, but after thinking about it for a long time, I’ve decided I have no other choice than to go to Bolivia. With Liam.” Her shoulders slumped. “In light of this, I think we need to consider whether Georgia can take over the digital design or if we need to train someone else in the next two days.
